8 miles of fireworks and steam trains

8 Miles of Fireworks…

Electrify are proud to announce that as part of the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railways’ 3 day annual Gala, for the first time ever, Saturday evening will see 8 miles of fireworks fired from the stations along the length of the track as the steam engine-lead train powers through the beautiful Powys countryside followed by a huge pyro-musical display at the Llanfair yard.

The Welshpool and Llanfair 2ft 6 inch gauge light steam railway was built in 1903 to link farming communities with the market town of Welshpool and provide them with an outlet for their produce. It closed in 1956 however was progressively rebuilt and re-opened by a group of enthusiasts from 1963 onward.  In conjunction with Electrify Pyrotechnics, the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway will celebrate its’ annual gala with a unique firework show running along its’ 8 miles of track culminating in an amazing firework display to music at its terminus.

The railway event is open to the general public and visitors can ride in one of the charming balconied carriages pulled by one of the railways steam engines from Welshpool Raven Square station along the 45 minute journey crossing a viaducts, river bridges, steep inclines and rolling countryside to the Llanfair station, passing along its way through the Powys Estate. In addition to the fireworks, the light railway will celebrate their biggest event of the year, now over 3 days, with every operating engine in use.  Traction engines, steam cars and lorries, a model railway exhibition, demonstrations and trade stands, and a shuttle bus to the associated Llanfair Garden railway show up the hill at Llanfair High School.  The Llanfair yard will also host a real ale bar, carved pork-roll trailer, steam traction engines, fairground organ and much, much more and so there really is something for all the family to see and do.

8 miles of fireworks and steam trains

WLLR General Manager, Charles Spencer said “Our annual Steam Gala has always been special, and this year all our volunteers are extremely excited at the prospect of partnering with Electrify Pyrotechnics to deliver a truly unique spectacle of steam and fireworks along the length of our line to celebrate the year in which we have been running longer as a heritage railway than the original railway operated as a commercial service.”

Electrify Director, Scott Pounder “In all the years delivering firework displays this has to be one of the most unique we’ve ever done. Logistically it’s incredibly difficult and requires a large number of firework firing staff and multiple firing systems, including the type that are used to fire the Mayor’s New Years’ Eve display in London.  Despite the challenges, the end result will be an incredible spectacle of two amazing things – steam trains and fireworks!Steam train shunting

The railway company’s website www.wllr.org.uk contains more information about the event and more details on the pyro-musical display can be found on Electrify Pyrotechnics website.

So why not let off some steam, and come and join us for a wonderful day out?

Summer Solstice Offer – Firework Display Discount Code

To celebrate the longest day, we’re offering a special deal if you book and use the voucher code from this blog.  Just book before 30th June to use the discount on your firework display at any time in the future!

#summer solstice fireworks

Summer is properly upon us and the nice weather always makes us feel generous, so with today being the longest day that’s a whole heap more sunshine to make us even happier!

Electrify are specialists in firework displays whatever the reason for your celebration…weddings, parties, birthdays, anniversaries, bonfire night, new years eve, Diwali, Bar / Bat Mitzvahs the list goes on.   With these long summer nights where the sunset isn’t until after 9:30pm, it means it isn’t properly dark until well after 10pm. This can create a challenge when it comes to firework displays at this time of year…

How do you do fireworks if it isn’t dark enough?
  1. Make it later – the obvious solution is to ensure your display takes place after it gets dark, however it is illegal in the UK to let fireworks off after 11pm (Bonfire Night & New Year’s Eve are the exception to that rule). So, for a 10 minute display, 10:50pm is the absolute latest start time.
  2. Check the time the sun is due to set – sites like The Met Office website offer a daily sunrise and a sunset time, remember that when the sun sets there’s still twilight which is the suns glow in the atmosphere.  Total darkness can be around 30-45 minutes after the sun disappears behind the horizon.
  3. Whilst a pitch black sky is perfect for a firework display, a slightly lighter sky gives an amazingly different hue and perspective to a display. Modern fireworks are very bright and a display can be incredibly impressive against a different coloured backdrop, even just after twilight when the sun has set but the sky isn’t absolutely dark.
  4. Leave it to the professionals – at Electrify Pyrotechnics, we know exactly what time to fire a display and how to work with the different shades of night in order to create the perfect display for your celebration, whatever the time of year. Give us a call on 01332 650770 to discuss the perfect timing for your perfect display.

So, in order to celebrate the longest day of the year, if you call us before the end of June and quote our Solstice Special Facebook voucher code of FB-SOL17 we will give you a show starter package (press the button to fire the first firework of your display and start the show yourself) and the fire writing package (your initials and a heart in fire writing) absolutely free*, regardless of when your event is.

So what are you waiting for, the days will soon be drawing in!  Visit us at electrifypyrotechnics.co.uk or call on 01332 650770 to discuss your celebration firework display.

Driving Great Place to Work and fundraising

One of the key challenges for a company driving toward a Great Place to Work status in their organisation is getting the funding to do it.  In today’s climate there is less and less funding available for fun events and social gatherings, where ROI is difficult to measure.  In this blog, we discuss the things that companies can do to improve their Great Place to Work standing, plus give a really useful fundraising tip to allow you to generate funding to take your GPTW status to the next level.

Most companies now understand the power of being a great place to work and the benefits it brings to productivity and staff tenure through improved employee engagement.  In a recent independent financial study, publicly traded companies that had achieved ‘Great Workplace’ status consistently outperform major stock indices by a factor of 2.  These workplaces also have 64% less staff turnover than their competitors. This inevitably saves vital margin eroding spend on things like training and recruitment.

According to the Great Place to Work website, when times are tough, employees at a great workplace show the resiliency to pull through. When times get better, those same employees are ready to lead the rally. It all adds up to cumulative success 2x better than the market average.

So, how do you bring your staff together when it’s hard to demonstrate the hard and fast short term benefits in a traditional business case and of course without breaking the bank?

Firstly, before thinking about spending any money, the one key piece of feedback that employees raise time and time again is around good workplace communication – and by that we mean two way communication.  It’s about trust, keeping employees informed, listening to their concerns and demonstrating that where you are able you are acting upon their suggestions.

This should be fairly easy – quarterly roundtables or Town Hall Meetings held by Executive and Senior Managers to talk about strategy and performance.  Trust your staff with information, but call out when information is sensitive and is for their ears only and not to be shared – clearly this is not about sharing confidential board room level strategic decisioning, but moreover giving your staff all the information they need to understand what is happening with the business and where it is going, including the challenges it faces.  This ensures staff feel engaged and aware of what is happening in the company (rather than like mushrooms – in the dark and fed…well, you know what)!

Ensure the sessions allow for people to raise questions.  If you want to be even more open, allow them to put forward questions and comments anonymously – this way you get a better view of what they think without expecting them to put their head above the parapet and risk shredding their career.

If you keep coming back to them with regular updates and further comms sessions, talking  about what they raised last time and what has been done, you will soon gain their trust and they will see that you are listening to them.  Where ideas, thoughts and suggestions cannot be implemented, as long as you tell them why rather than glossing over them then the majority of staff will understand why.

All that sounds fairly basic and straightforward, however the given the number of companies that fail on staff engagement – it clearly isn’t.  Cascading information down the management chain is critical however sometimes people want to feel like they matter, and to be visited by the CEO and asked for their important opinions on how the company is performing is a great way to get your staff engaged.   Remember, those at the coalface usually have the best view of what is happening with your clients and customers, senior management can get real insight here. It’s a win win.

So what else can you do to ensure your staff feel engaged and enjoy working for your company?  These are our key principles that we feel are really important, they aren’t exhaustive by any means, however these are the ones we’ve actively adopted to drive GPTW:

  1. Brand affinity and loyalty – drive a pride in your workforce around your brand products and services. If your staff love the business, they’ll give more and defend it to the hilt.
  2. Create a culture of inclusion – a blameless culture where employees are encouraged to push further, where it is OK to take risks as long as they are well thought through and understood, and mistakes are learnt from and not repeated.
  3. A culture of development with recognition of high performance – strong company values that are driven from the top down and lived every day are important here.
  4. Staff are not just numbers – a company that cares. For instance, in the recent spate of terrorist attacks, a company that ensures that staff are safe and issues communications offering advice to ensure staff remain safe will more likely engender an environment where staff feel like they are treated as individuals and that the company truly cares about them as people.
  5. Wellbeing and Diversity programs driving Health, Welfare and inclusion.
  6. Social activities outside of the work environment to drive a closer community within it.

Point 6 is always the challenging topic mainly due to the costs of funding such an event, however there are a number of things that can be done to avoid a huge outlay, and sometimes bring in money to fund other internal events…

Corporate or Staff Parties

These can be a great way for staff to meet outside of the work environment and get to know their colleagues on a personal level.  A fun event creates a talking point back in the workplace which improves camaraderie and teamwork. Many teams, departments and organisations will raise funds internally (from the likes of a cake bake or samosa sale in order to part-fund a summer or Christmas party).  Alternatively, by selling tickets at an affordable rate, funding for food and events can be gathered that way.

We recently ran an incredibly popular campaign called “Fundraising through fireworks” where organisations sold tickets for a works event with a huge firework display at the end.   The promise of a really spectacular firework display helped sell the tickets which drove the funding. The events were typically held at a local pub with land, or a community centre. The display was linked to the corporate brand (Eg, the companies name in firewriting, corporate colours for the finale), and with the money raised through ticket sales they were able to put on food, plus things like bouncy castles for the children, inflatable games for the adults (Eg, bucking broncos, bungee runs) as well as pay for the display.  They also put on free games like rounders, space hopper races, sports days etc.  Staff were happy to pay for their own drinks and by inviting a local ice cream van they were more than covered for a very successful night.  The display at the end of the night tops off the event, creating a celebratory atmosphere and the wow factor that keeps everyone talking about what a great night it was for months to come.

We’ve had some really positive feedback from organisations that have done this, and we are seeing an unprecedented repeat booking level as events grow in size. Many organisations that have rebooked with us year after year have told us that ticket sales grow YoY, it becomes more inclusive and they have enough money left over from ticket sales allowing them to fund other purchases such as new coffee machines, games tables and in one instance a refit to their staff kitchen!

Our corporate firework displays don’t cost as much as you would think, and we do all the hard work around the display planning, insurance and the health & safety assessments.

It’s spring, and officially wedding season…

By late February, all at Electrify are counting down the days until Spring with its’ longer days, warmer weather and all the floral beauty that goes with it.  It’s now May and I’m pleased to say that the blossom is on the trees, the birds are singing and the garden furniture is back out of the shed.

It’s this time of year when people start thinking about their weddings, and we at Electrify start attending wedding fayres to talk to couples about how they would like to celebrate their special day and how we can help them make it unique and memorable.

From May until September, it’s officially wedding season, and through the warmer months people are busy planning their special days.  Are you getting married over the next few years, will you be going to a close friend or relatives’ wedding?

At Electrify we have spent the winter months reviewing our displays and looking at ways to improve further on all that we do.  What can we do differently to further add that special sparkle to someone’s day?   We already do so much, and many of our customers didn’t realise that as well as wedding fireworks, we also do the following:

  • Fireworks for all types of celebrations
  • Pyromusicals – fireworks that are fired perfectly in time with your choices of music
  • Lighting shows to either go with your fireworks, or a lighting and music show without the fireworks (ideal for those venues that cannot permit fireworks)
  • PA & disco lighting hire – hire sound systems (speakers, microphone, amplifier) so you can plug in your own iPod or music player and play your own tunes

Our firework and lighting displays are well catalogued on our website in our Celebration Fireworks section.

Whilst we have specific wedding packages to make selecting a display easy for you, they are completely customisable and so a quick phone call to us and we can talk you through anything and everything you can do to make your wedding firework display even more unique.

Our lighting show packages can be viewed on our website at www.electrifylighting.co.uk

In terms of hiring PA equipment, all the details can be found here at www.electrifysound.co.uk but what exactly is it for?

  • Are you getting married in the Midlands area (Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, South Yorkshire)?
  • Do you want complete control over your music selection and playlist on your wedding day?
  • Do you want to save costs on paying for a Disco DJ?
  • Do you want really high quality speakers and lighting?

If you can say yes to the above then we can help.  High quality sound systems for hire at really economic prices, plug and play set up that anyone can follow and it’s as easy as picking it up, using it and then dropping it back when you’re finished.

Digital Fireworks

We’re in the digital age, there’s no doubting that, although many would argue that we’ve been in the digital age for decades now. In fact, it’s been around since the modern computer made its’ way into businesses and domestic households and made many chores such as storing records, communication and marketing become electronic. Away with those large filing cabinets!  You’ll notice your email box is full of junk mail, and less in your postbox.  In the second decade of the 21st Century though, what defines this as the Digital Age is the speed of change. Whether you’ve recently  flown a drone, spoken to an AI (Siri, Amazon Echo – Alexa), purchased a Bitcoin, driven a Tesla, or programmed your heating to come on from your mobile phone you’re part of the digital transformation.

The digital transformation is touching everyone’s lives, whether at work, at home, in your car or in your personal lives. In the past, a commute to work on the train would involve listening to music on your Walkman, reading a newspaper or book, or reading through work papers.  Now, many people, glued to their smartphones can do all that from one device. They can control those things too, interacting live whilst on the train, from selecting one of thousands of song choices from their collections, reading the most up to date breaking news, listening to audio versions of their favourite books to ordering their partners anniversary present. Whatever your age, the digital world touches upon our lives and it is changing at an astonishing rate.

What is fundamentally different about this decade though, and beyond,  are the Digital Natives, the children that were born in the digital age that know no different.  Many of us have watched as our children have swiped across a small photo in a magazine trying to make it bigger, as they would on a tablet or smartphone. For people my age, we remember teaching our parents how to operate the VHS player, and now our children and grandchildren are teaching us about living, interacting and socialising in the digital world.

The world around us is changing on a daily basis, soon driverless cars will end the quandary about drinking or driving, taxis with drivers will be a thing of the past. Call Centres, the factories of the 21st century will be replaced by chatbots, AI and virtual agents. The ‘Connected House’, ‘Connected Car’, ‘Connected Everything’ and the Internet of Things will revolutionise how we go about our lives.  The question is not if, but when…

So what exactly does this have to do with fireworks?  Well, as an owner of a firework company, I am all too aware of the impact of the digital world. (I’m already behind the times writing this Blog, surely it should be a Vlog and uploaded onto YouTube!?!  Maybe next time!)  How do I interact with today’s customers, how do I use digital to differentiate myself from all the other firework companies out there, how do I get myself as far up the search engine rankings so people find my web presence? How do I make it easier and easier for new customers to find me and make it easier for them to do business with me?

According to an MCA survey back in 2014, 94% of UK Senior Executives saw Digital as important or very important to their business.  Now, that is 100%.  Digital makes more things possible than before, and provides the agility that firework companies need in order to offer things to their customers in order to modernise.  Digital can offer differentiation between firework companies and allows those companies to think about what their specialism is.

Most firework companies have a web presence. Like most companies, if you don’t then you’re missing out on the majority of the customer interaction and your existence is one dimensional and limited, and it’s unlikely you’ll truly thrive as a business. We’ve seen the death of the high street.  A good Social Media presence is critical, not only does it help with SEO, it shows your customers and potential customers what you do and what your company is all about. It’s the new marketing and brand aid. None of that is news to anyone, however your brand on Social Media can make, and equally break your company like never before. (Write your complaint on Twitter and see how quickly those customer service orientated companies react).

Online payments, whether that’s a website payment solution, or the ability to take online transfers is critical, as is the ability to contact customers and communicate in a digital way. “Always online, always available” is more important than ever – as a Firework company most of our business is done outside of Mon – Fri 9-5.30pm. We have moved away from that traditional model, you can book one of our firework displays 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Safety too, with electronic systems to calculate and track black powder weights so rules and regulations are adhered to and can be proven to insurance companies and regulatory bodies alike.

What about the actual display? What technology is out there to digitalise the firework display of the future?  Since the Chinese invented fireworks 2000 years ago, they have been let off manually (with fire presented to the firework fuse). As firers and lovers of fireworks I can tell you, you can’t beat hand-firing fireworks, the adrenaline buzz of standing next to the pyro and the art of timing it to give a great show. However, many shows now require a level of precision that hand firing just can’t offer. Pyromusicals where we need fireworks to explode to the beat of the music, down to the hundredth of a second, large displays where we need reliability and the ability to watch a demo of the show beforehand to establish its’ impact, or lighting & firework pyromusicals which are unique to Electrify where lights and fireworks move in time to each other and the music.   We have embraced the Digital era and have our digital suppliers and systems of choice to make all this happen.

#digitalfireworks showsim

At Electrify we have worked to be fully immersed in the Digital Age, most of our staff are not Digital Natives however we do see ourselves as Digital Entrepreneurs and  it’s embracing that technology that is not only revolutionising the way we engage with our customers but the quality and the impact of our shows too.  Electrify are fairly unique with our firework and light show pyromusicals. The digital kit that goes together to allow that show to firstly be designed, tested and then finally fired is cutting edge, and that just wouldn’t be possible at that level of precision of a pre-digital age – it’s disruptive and it allows Electrify to be disruptive in a saturated firework industry.  We are using digital technology to differentiate ourselves.

#Digital Fireworks Music Mixing

In a nutshell, Digital allows old things to be done in a new way, but also for completely new things to be done. Check out our digital lighting and firework pyromusicals here.
